Fractional CFO services in Manchester

Manchester is the UK's largest tech ecosystem outside London - home to over 510 technology businesses and the only Northern city to have produced multiple unicorns.

Greater Manchester tech companies raised approximately £380 million across 78 deals in the 12 months to Q3 2024, making it the dominant capital destination in the North of England and the North West's de facto fundraising gateway into UK and US institutional VC.

We work with Manchester-based startups from seed to Series B+, supporting them on fundraise prep, financial modelling, board packs, runway management and investor reporting.

Manchester startup ecosystem

What defines Manchester's startup ecosystem - sector depth, physical clusters, institutional investors and the talent pipeline that sets it apart from other Northern cities.

The UK's largest tech hub outside London

Greater Manchester has more than 510 technology businesses headquartered in the county and ranked 13th in Europe for AI talent density in 2024. In 2023 startups raised £532m in disclosed equity deals - a figure that drew comparison with mid-tier European tech cities. The city sits at the centre of Tech North's Northern Powerhouse narrative and anchors the region's case for institutional investment.

AI and data as the defining cluster

Peak AI's $119m SoftBank-backed round and Matillion's Lightspeed-led unicorn round established Manchester as a credible AI and data destination. The city subsequently ranked 13th in Europe for AI talent concentration. The University of Manchester's Alan Turing Institute partnership and the proximity of BAE Systems Digital Intelligence reinforce the cluster's R&D base.

Distinct physical clusters: NOMA, Spinningfields and Citylabs

NOMA (the Co-op-led regeneration north of the city centre) and Bruntwood SciTech's Circle Square development at Oxford Road anchor the SaaS and deep-tech communities. Spinningfields houses the professional-services and fintech layer - home to NatWest, HSBC and Barclays Midlands operations. Citylabs, a £1bn campus adjacent to Manchester Royal Infirmary, is the healthtech and medtech hub.

University of Manchester and MMU talent pipeline

The University of Manchester (the UK's largest single-site university) and Manchester Metropolitan University together graduate roughly 10,000 STEM students annually. The University of Manchester's National Graphene Institute and its commercialisation arm, UMIP, have produced more than 80 spinouts. The city also draws engineering and finance talent from Liverpool, Leeds and Sheffield, making senior hires more accessible than in comparable Northern cities.

Accelerators and angel networks active in Manchester

Manchester's accelerator scene is anchored by two distinct tracks - a corporate-innovation and deep-tech stream centred on Bruntwood SciTech, and an early-stage and angel-led stream via GC Angels and Praetura. These are the programmes most active Manchester founders encounter at pre-seed and seed.

Bruntwood SciTech - Manchester Tech Incubator

Bruntwood SciTech's Manchester Tech Incubator is a joint venture between Bruntwood and Legal & General operating out of Circle Square. In 2024 alone it welcomed 107 new businesses into its Manchester and Cheshire estate and supported 35 existing scaleups to expand. Runs a Female Founders Incubator and a Life Sciences Accelerator at the Alderley Park campus.

GC Angels - Venture Forward

GC Angels, the venture capital arm of The Growth Company, delivers Innovate UK's 'Venture Forward' accelerator across the North from its Manchester base. The three-month cohort programme targets early-stage companies seeking their first institutional round, with co-investment from GC Angels' own SEIS/EIS fund alongside Innovate UK grant backing.

Praetura Ventures

Praetura Ventures is Manchester's most active early-stage investor, backing companies since 2011 from its King Street office. Portfolio includes Peak AI and The Modern Milkman. Runs a hands-on accelerator-style programme alongside its SEIS/EIS fund, offering operational support as well as capital. Tickets typically range from £100k to £2m.

Wayra UK - GCHQ Manchester Engineering Accelerator

Wayra UK, Telefónica's innovation arm, co-runs the GCHQ Manchester Engineering Accelerator - an intensive three-month programme for greater-Manchester-based security, AI and engineering startups. Participants gain access to Telefónica/O2 as a commercial pilot partner and to GCHQ's national security customer base.

Northern Gritstone

Northern Gritstone was founded by the Universities of Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield to commercialise deep-tech and life-sciences spinouts from those institutions. It bridges the gap between academic IP and growth-stage VC by investing at spinout and seed, with a particular focus on materials science, AI and biotech from within the Manchester university ecosystem.

Manchester Angels

Manchester Angels, launched in partnership with GP Bullhound and Manchester Digital, is an organised angel syndicate targeting pre-seed and seed companies across the city. Members include serial founders and senior executives from Manchester's corporate base. Provides structured co-investment alongside institutional leads rather than standalone tickets.

Manchester startup accountants vs Flow fractional CFO

Most Manchester startups work with a local chartered accountancy firm for statutory accounts, corporation tax and payroll. That role is essential - but it does not replace a fractional CFO.

Manchester startup accountants

Statutory accounts, corporation tax, VAT and payroll. The firms most used by Manchester venture-backed startups.

  • Cowgills

North West-headquartered chartered accountancy firm (part of the Sumer Group, a top-13 UK accountancy group) with offices in Manchester, Bolton and Liverpool. Strong track record with owner-managed and VC-backed businesses across the region.

  • Jack Ross

Manchester-based chartered accountants with a dedicated startup practice covering bookkeeping, management accounts, R&D tax credits and Companies House compliance for early-stage tech companies.

  • Cooper Parry

  • Xeinadin

Top-20 accountancy network with a Manchester office, covering tax, audit, payroll and corporate finance for growth-stage companies across the North West.

Flow fractional CFO

Financial modelling, FP&A and fundraise prep. We work alongside your accountant - not instead of them.

  • Builds the financial model - revenue assumptions, headcount, unit economics, runway.
  • Sets up the monthly FP&A cycle: budget, forecast vs actual, variance analysis.
  • Puts together the monthly board pack - P&L, cash, KPIs and forward outlook.
  • Prepares the fundraise: investor model, deck financials, data room and diligence prep.
  • Keeps the cap table tidy and handles EMI option grants and HMRC valuations.
  • Reports on the KPIs that move the business - ARR, gross margin, CAC payback, retention.
  • Pressure tests hiring, pricing and big spend decisions against the model before the founder commits.
  • Sits in board meetings and is embedded week-to-week, not just engaged annually for compliance.

Simple pricing

No hidden costs, no complicated long-term contracts. We understand how important flexibility is for Manchester startups.
