Fractional CFO services in Rome

Rome is Italy's second startup hub with over 1,600 registered innovative startups in the Lazio region - well behind Milan but structurally distinct, concentrating in aerospace, cybersecurity, life sciences and culture-tech rather than fintech or SaaS.

Lazio Innova administers a €100 million+ venture strategy from the region, and the Lazio government committed a new VC endowment of over €100 million in June 2025. The city's proximity to the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the Defense ministry has shaped a defence-tech and space cluster with no equivalent elsewhere in Italy.

We work with Rome-based startups from seed to Series B+, supporting them on financial modelling, runway management, investor reporting, fundraise prep and hiring plans.

Rome startup ecosystem

What makes Rome's startup ecosystem distinct - sector concentrations, university clusters and the talent pipeline that feeds the city's venture scene.

Italy's second hub - specialised, not generic

Rome ranks second among Italian cities for registered innovative startups, with 1,600 in Lazio as of 2024. Its character is different from Milan: the dominant clusters are aerospace and security, life sciences, culture and tourism tech, and agrifood - reflecting the city's industrial base, government institutions and research infrastructure. The 15 VC firms profiled by industry observers collectively manage over €5 billion focused on Roman and Lazio deal flow.

Aerospace, deeptech and AI emerging clusters

The Italian Space Agency (ASI) is headquartered in Rome, creating a direct pipeline for space-tech and defence startups. Pi Campus, based in EUR, focuses specifically on AI applied to slow-moving industries. Translated, one of Rome's most successful exits, developed AI-powered translation technology from the city. The Rome ecosystem skews earlier-stage than Milan but has produced notable exits in AI and digital services.

LUISS Hub, EUR and Termini Station

LUISS EnLabs operates from a 5,000 m² hub inside Roma Termini station, hosting 40+ startups employing 500+ people - the most visible startup campus in the city. Pi Campus is set in the EUR business district, Rome's rationalist postwar quarter, focused on AI. LUISS University's main campus in the Parioli area anchors the city's business and entrepreneurship academic output.

Talent from LUISS, La Sapienza and Tor Vergata

LUISS Guido Carli supplies Rome's most commercially oriented graduate talent - its management and law faculties feed the startup scene directly through LUISS EnLabs. La Sapienza, one of Europe's largest universities, provides the scientific and engineering depth for deeptech and life-sciences startups. Università di Roma Tor Vergata contributes engineering and biomedical research output relevant to the aerospace and health clusters.

Accelerators and angel networks active in Rome

Rome's accelerator infrastructure is anchored by LUISS EnLabs - Italy's best-known non-Milan programme - and Pi Campus, the city's AI-specialist VC. The Lazio region's €100 million+ venture strategy amplifies what each programme can offer on capital access.

LUISS EnLabs

LUISS EnLabs is Rome's flagship startup accelerator and co-working hub, located inside Roma Termini station over 5,000 m². It invests €250,000 into ambitious digital startups, hosts 40+ active companies employing 500+ people, and is backed by LVenture Group - a publicly listed VC. Focus areas include AI, fintech, digital services and marketplace models.

Pi Campus

Pi Campus is an AI-focused VC and startup campus based in Rome's EUR district. It invests up to €500,000 in early-stage companies applying AI to large, slow-moving industries. Portfolio companies are embedded on the campus, sharing infrastructure with Pi's resident research team. It is one of Italy's most respected AI-specialist early-stage investors.

LVenture Group

LVenture Group is Italy's only publicly listed startup accelerator and VC, trading on the AIM Italia market. It manages LUISS EnLabs as its operating accelerator, takes minority stakes in portfolio companies and provides a secondary capital market path for Italian digital startups. It has backed 200+ companies over its history.

Startup Geeks

Startup Geeks is a Rome-based community and event network that runs regular pitch nights, founder meetups and mentoring sessions connecting early-stage Rome founders with angels, operators and investors. It serves as a pre-accelerator informal pipeline for founders considering LUISS EnLabs or Pi Campus.

Lazio Innova

Lazio Innova is the regional economic development agency for Lazio, managing a €100 million+ venture capital strategy announced in June 2025. It administers co-investment grants, technology transfer programmes and startup support infrastructure connecting Rome-based founders to EU and national funding instruments.

Startupbootcamp FoodTech Rome

Startupbootcamp FoodTech Rome runs a corporate-backed acceleration programme for food-tech and agrifood startups, drawing on Rome's proximity to Italy's agrifood industrial base and the connections to Barilla, Lavazza and other Italian food corporates that participate as programme partners.

Rome startup accountants vs Flow fractional CFO

Most Rome startups engage a dottore commercialista or studio legale e commercialista for tax, payroll and Agenzia delle Entrate filings. That function is required by Italian law - but it is not a substitute for a fractional CFO.

Rome startup accountants

Statutory accounts, corporate tax (IRES/IRAP), VAT (IVA) and payroll. The firms most commonly used by Rome venture-backed startups.

  • BDO Italia

  • EY Italia

  • Forvis Mazars Italy

  • Studio Tributario e Societario Deloitte

Flow fractional CFO

Financial modelling, FP&A and fundraise prep. We work alongside your commercialista - not instead of them.

  • Builds the financial model - revenue assumptions, headcount, unit economics, runway.
  • Sets up the monthly FP&A cycle: budget, forecast vs actual, variance analysis.
  • Puts together the monthly board pack - P&L, cash, KPIs and forward outlook.
  • Prepares the fundraise: investor model, deck financials, data room and diligence prep.
  • Keeps the cap table tidy and handles option pool management and 409A-equivalent valuations.
  • Reports on the KPIs that move the business - ARR, gross margin, CAC payback, retention.
  • Pressure tests hiring, pricing and big spend decisions against the model before the founder commits.
  • Sits in board meetings and is embedded week-to-week, not just engaged annually for compliance.

Simple pricing

No hidden costs, no complicated long-term contracts. We understand how important flexibility is for Rome startups.
