Fractional CFO services in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is the UK's second-ranked city for high-growth tech companies by density, behind only London according to Barclays Eagle Labs' 2024 Tech in the UK report - and in 2025 Deloitte named it a leading AI City of the Future.

Scotland now accounts for roughly 12% of all UK equity deals by number, with Edinburgh as the capital city that anchors the country's institutional funding relationships. Since 2011 the city has seen more than 475 equity deals worth over £710m, overwhelmingly in technology and IP-led businesses.

We work with Edinburgh-based startups from seed to Series B+, supporting them on FP&A, board packs, fundraise prep, investor reporting, monthly close and runway management.

Edinburgh startup ecosystem

What sets Edinburgh apart within the UK tech landscape - sector depth, physical clusters, the university commercialisation engine and Scotland-specific funding infrastructure.

Second only to London in high-growth tech density

Barclays Eagle Labs' 2024 Tech in the UK report ranked Edinburgh second in the UK for density of high-growth tech companies. The city's relatively small geographic footprint and large professional talent pool - fed by the University of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt and Edinburgh Napier - concentrate tech activity in a way comparable with Cambridge rather than with larger but more diffuse Northern English cities.

Fintech, life sciences and enterprise SaaS as the defining sectors

Edinburgh's professional-services heritage (home to Standard Life Aberdeen, Baillie Gifford and the RBS/NatWest Scottish operations) produces a deep fintech and regtech pipeline. The BioQuarter anchors an internationally recognised life-sciences cluster. Enterprise SaaS targeting US markets - following Skyscanner's and Craneware's transatlantic trajectories - is the fastest-growing category in current deal flow.

CodeBase, Edinburgh BioQuarter and the Old Town cluster

CodeBase at 37a Castle Terrace is the UK's largest independent tech incubator by community size, housing hundreds of startups and delivering the Scottish Government's Techscaler programme. Edinburgh BioQuarter on Little France Drive provides lab and office space to 8,000+ researchers, clinicians and startup teams. The University of Edinburgh's Old College Capital fund backs spinouts from within the university, with the Bayes Centre on Potterrow running the Venture Builder and AI Accelerator programmes.

University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt talent pipeline

The University of Edinburgh is a Russell Group institution ranked in the global top 30, with particular strength in computer science, AI and biomedical sciences. Its commercialisation arm, Edinburgh Innovations, has produced a consistent stream of IP-led spinouts. Heriot-Watt provides engineering, mathematics and data science graduates, and Edinburgh Napier supplies a large volume of software development talent. The EIE Investment Showcase - Scotland's flagship tech investor event - is hosted by the University annually.

Accelerators and angel networks active in Edinburgh

Edinburgh's accelerator infrastructure is anchored by the Scottish Government's Techscaler programme and the University of Edinburgh's own commercialisation machine. These are the primary programmes Edinburgh founders engage at pre-seed and seed.

Techscaler - Funding Accelerator

Techscaler, delivered by CodeBase on behalf of the Scottish Government, runs Edinburgh's most active structured accelerator programme. The Funding Accelerator is a three-month cohort programme for startups raising their first or second equity round in the £100k–£1m range. Members across all seven Techscaler hubs raised over £50m in 2023. The Edinburgh hub is at Castle Terrace, embedded within the CodeBase community.

EIE Investment Showcase

EIE (Engaging Innovation with Entrepreneurs) is Scotland's premier tech investor showcase, hosted annually by the University of Edinburgh. Companies pitch at seed through Series A to a combined audience of Scottish, London and international investors. Chiene + Tait (CT Advisers), MBM Commercial and Scottish Enterprise are anchor sponsors. EIE25 took place in May 2025 with over 30 companies presenting.

Old College Capital

Old College Capital is the University of Edinburgh's venture investment fund, backing the most commercially promising spinouts from the university's research base. Has co-invested alongside Kelvin Capital and Scottish Enterprise in early-stage deep-tech and medtech companies. Investment focus spans AI, precision medicine, materials science and enterprise software.

Bayes Centre - Venture Builder & AI Accelerator

The Bayes Centre is the University of Edinburgh's data science and AI hub on Potterrow, running three founder programmes: the Venture Builder (concept to funding), the AI Accelerator (AI-native startups) and the EIE Investment Showcase. Provides access to the university's research computing infrastructure, IP support and investor network.

Scottish EDGE

Scottish EDGE is a competition-based funding programme awarding up to £150,000 in combined grant and loan to Scotland's most innovative early-stage businesses. Run quarterly, it is sector-agnostic but has a strong track record with Edinburgh-based deeptech and social enterprise founders. Partnered with Techscaler to provide a pathway from EDGE awards into the Techscaler accelerator community.

Barclays Eagle Labs Edinburgh

Barclays Eagle Labs runs an Edinburgh hub co-located with CodeBase and the Edinburgh Futures Institute, providing coworking, mentor access and connections to Barclays' corporate and investor network. Eagle Labs Edinburgh co-hosted the 2024 Ecosystem Exchange conference - a UK-wide gathering for tech ecosystem leaders - cementing its role as a convening venue for the Scottish startup community.

Edinburgh startup accountants vs Flow fractional CFO

Most Edinburgh startups work with a local chartered accountancy firm for statutory compliance and tax. Scotland has its own distinct accountancy landscape - the firms below are those most commonly used by Edinburgh's VC-backed founders.

Statutory accounts, corporation tax, VAT, EIS/SEIS administration and payroll. The firms most used by Edinburgh's venture-backed startups.

Flow fractional CFO

Financial modelling, FP&A and fundraise prep. We work alongside your accountant - not instead of them.

  • Builds the financial model - revenue assumptions, headcount, unit economics, runway.
  • Sets up the monthly FP&A cycle: budget, forecast vs actual, variance analysis.
  • Puts together the monthly board pack - P&L, cash, KPIs and forward outlook.
  • Prepares the fundraise: investor model, deck financials, data room and diligence prep.
  • Keeps the cap table tidy and handles EMI option grants and HMRC valuations.
  • Reports on the KPIs that move the business - ARR, gross margin, CAC payback, retention.
  • Pressure tests hiring, pricing and big spend decisions against the model before the founder commits.
  • Sits in board meetings and is embedded week-to-week, not just engaged annually for compliance.
