Fractional CFO services in Birmingham

Birmingham has ranked as the UK's most startup-intensive city outside London for seven consecutive years by number of new business formations.

The West Midlands region raised $1.7bn in startup funding in 2023 - driven in part by a £500m Series A+ for autonomous vehicle startup Conigital, one of the largest rounds ever closed outside London. Bruntwood SciTech invested a further £50m into its six Birmingham innovation hubs in 2024, and the city hosts over 2,000 tech startups and 6,000 tech businesses across fintech, digital marketing, medtech and gaming.

We work with Birmingham-based startups from seed to Series B+, supporting them on financial modelling, fundraise prep, FP&A, hiring plans, monthly close and unit economics.

Birmingham startup ecosystem

What defines Birmingham's startup ecosystem - formation density, sector clusters, physical infrastructure and the talent pipeline feeding the West Midlands tech scene.

Most startup-dense UK city outside London, seven years running

Birmingham has led the UK in startup formation per capita outside London for seven consecutive years. Over 2,000 tech startups and 6,000 tech businesses are headquartered in the city. The West Midlands secured $1.7bn in startup investment in 2023, with VC growth rates between 2020 and 2023 exceeding those of every other UK city outside London.

Gaming, fintech and advanced manufacturing as the defining sectors

Birmingham and its immediate surrounds house approximately 25% of the UK's games development industry - a cluster that includes Codemasters (acquired by EA for $1.2bn) and a dense layer of independent studios. The city's financial services heritage supports a fintech and payments cluster. Advanced manufacturing and automotive (Jaguar Land Rover's global HQ is in Coventry, 20 minutes away) feeds an applied AI and industrial IoT layer.

Innovation Birmingham, Digbeth and the Knowledge Quarter

Innovation Birmingham Campus at Faraday Wharf is the UK's largest campus dedicated exclusively to digital technology businesses - over 100,000 sq ft of space for startups, scaleups and corporate R&D teams. Digbeth's Custard Factory complex anchors the creative and games cluster. Bruntwood SciTech operates six innovation hubs across the city, with a new £4.5m startup hub in the city centre opening in 2024. The Knowledge Quarter - anchored by the University of Birmingham and Birmingham Children's Hospital - is the medtech and healthtech node.

University of Birmingham, Aston and Birmingham City University talent pipeline

The University of Birmingham (Russell Group, top-15 UK) and Aston University together graduate large cohorts of computer science, engineering and business students annually. Birmingham City University's School of Computing and Digital Technology has a strong industry placement programme with local tech firms. The city's four universities collectively produce more STEM graduates than Edinburgh or Bristol, providing a broad-based mid-level hiring pool for scaling startups.

Accelerators and angel networks active in Birmingham

Birmingham's accelerator infrastructure spans public-sector-backed programmes via GBSLEP and the West Midlands Growth Company through to innovation-campus-embedded support at Innovation Birmingham. These are the most active programmes founders encounter at pre-seed and seed in the city.

Innovation Birmingham - Campus Accelerator

Innovation Birmingham operates the UK's largest dedicated digital-tech campus at Faraday Wharf, providing structured accelerator support alongside workspace. Backed by Bruntwood SciTech and Birmingham City Council, the campus supports digital tech startups with mentoring, investor introductions and access to corporate pilot partners.

GBSLEP Growth Hub - Entrepreneur Accelerator

GBSLEP Growth Hub runs the NatWest Entrepreneur Accelerator in Birmingham - a six-month programme for high-growth businesses targeting scale. No equity taken; government and bank-backed. Provides access to advisers, peer networks and follow-on funding introductions across the Greater Birmingham and Solihull enterprise zone.

West Midlands Innovation Accelerator

The West Midlands Innovation Accelerator is a £140m UKRI-backed programme covering Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton. It funds deep-tech and applied-research companies commercialising technology from the University of Birmingham, Aston University, Coventry University and the University of Warwick. Focus areas include advanced manufacturing, health innovation and net-zero technology.

5PRING - 5G Commercial Applications Accelerator

5PRING is the UK's first commercial 5G applications accelerator, based in Birmingham. Targets startups and established businesses building commercial applications on 5G networks, with access to a live 5G test bed, funding and corporate pilot partners. Sector-agnostic but particularly active in logistics, manufacturing and smart-city applications.

Bruntwood SciTech - Female Founders Incubator

Bruntwood SciTech expanded its Female Founders Incubator to Birmingham in 2024, running cohorts of six founders per location through a focused mentorship and investor-readiness programme across its Birmingham innovation hubs. Provides subsidised workspace, SEIS/EIS introductions and connections to the broader Bruntwood SciTech national portfolio.

Barclays Eagle Labs Birmingham

Barclays Eagle Labs operates a Birmingham hub providing coworking, mentor access and structured scale-up programmes. The Birmingham Eagle Lab connects founders to Barclays' corporate banking network, Innovate UK programmes and the West Midlands' dense financial-services employer base as a route to enterprise sales and pilot contracts.

Birmingham startup accountants vs Flow fractional CFO

Most Birmingham startups work with a local chartered accountancy firm for statutory compliance, corporation tax and payroll. That role is essential - but it does not replace a fractional CFO.

Birmingham startup accountants

Statutory accounts, corporation tax, VAT and payroll. The firms most used by Birmingham's venture-backed startups.

  • Dains Accountants

Midlands-headquartered chartered accountancy and business advisory firm (PE-backed by Horizon Capital since 2021) with primary offices in Birmingham, Derby and Lichfield. Strong track record with owner-managed and growth-stage businesses across the West Midlands.

  • Haines Watts Birmingham

Edgbaston-based office of the national Haines Watts mid-market network, serving SMEs and growth-stage companies in Birmingham for over 20 years. Covers accounts, tax, payroll and business advisory for founder-led businesses.

  • Forvis Mazars Birmingham

Top-ten global firm with a Birmingham office at Two Chamberlain Square that expanded its team by 20% in 2024. Audit, tax, advisory and consulting services for Series A and above companies requiring investor-grade reporting.

  • Cooper Parry

East Midlands-founded, startup-focused chartered firm with a deep VC-backed client base across the Midlands. Frequently selected by Birmingham founders for its familiarity with EIS/SEIS schemes, R&D tax credits and investor-facing reporting.

  • RSM UK

Top-six accountancy network with a sizeable Birmingham office covering audit, tax and corporate finance advisory for growth-stage and mid-market companies across the West Midlands.

Flow fractional CFO

Financial modelling, FP&A and fundraise prep. We work alongside your accountant - not instead of them.

  • Builds the financial model - revenue assumptions, headcount, unit economics, runway.
  • Sets up the monthly FP&A cycle: budget, forecast vs actual, variance analysis.
  • Puts together the monthly board pack - P&L, cash, KPIs and forward outlook.
  • Prepares the fundraise: investor model, deck financials, data room and diligence prep.
  • Keeps the cap table tidy and handles EMI option grants and HMRC valuations.
  • Reports on the KPIs that move the business - ARR, gross margin, CAC payback, retention.
  • Pressure tests hiring, pricing and big spend decisions against the model before the founder commits.
  • Sits in board meetings and is embedded week-to-week, not just engaged annually for compliance.

No hidden costs, no complicated long-term contracts. We understand how important flexibility is for Birmingham startups.
