VC fundraising for online marketplaces companies
Marketplace fundraising has been through a sharp cycle. Round sizes spiked in 2020-2021 when investors underwrote on GMV and growth, then compressed in 2022-2023 as the same funds moved to net revenue, take rate and cohort economics. Recent rounds price more soberly, with capital concentrating in operators that show clean unit economics.
The active investor base splits between marketplace specialists - Greylock, Bessemer, Forerunner and Union Square Ventures - and the generalists with deep marketplace books, including Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz and Accel. Corporate venture from Amazon's Alexa Fund and from Uber on adjacent commerce and logistics theses also surfaces in growth rounds. Flow has direct relationships with the marketplace specialists, the generalists writing this thesis and the corporate venture arms active in the category.
Flow has experience running VC fundraising processes for online marketplace companies across resale, classifieds, handmade and craft commerce, vertical and B2B marketplaces, authenticated goods and consumer services platforms. Our extensive investor network spans early-stage seed funds, growth-stage investors, and strategic and corporate VC arms.
